Glasgow City 0-1 Somatio Barcelona FA

Written by on 28th September 2018

Glasgow City booked their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League despite suffering defeat at home to Petershill Park.

City took a two goal lead into the home leg after a terrific result in Cyprus but they were put under pressure early when the visitors struck.

A high throw ball wasn’t dealt with by the City defense and Krystyna Freda fired in off the bar to give Somatio the perfect start.

City responded well with Lara Ivanusa and Nicola Docherty going close but Somatio were dangerous on the break with Lee Alexander in the City goal being forced into action.

Whatever Scott Booth said at half-time seemed to re-energise the hosts but they still couldn’t break down the Somatio defence with Anna Rosa Buhigas making some great saves to deny Sam Kerr and Hayley Lauder from equalising.

As the clocked ticked down, City began to sit deeper and deeper but Somatio were restricted to long shots and couldn’t find a way past Alexander.

City hung on to secure a first knockout stage win since 2014 with all eyes now on Geneva for Monday’s draw.
